How To Become A Successful Affiliate Marketer

How To Become A Successful Affiliate Marketer

How To Become A Successful Affiliate Marketer

By Mathew Gunnufson

Many see affiliate marketing as an easy way to make money. There are no costs to be spent on product development, there are no fees to join an affiliate program, however some affiliate programs charge a small fee to join, and you have access to millions of Internet users from all over the world. There are ways to ensure that your affiliate marketing program is meeting its intended objectives. Let's start with:

1. Knowing your audience: This is one of the most basic principles of marketing. You can't fulfill your potential customers' needs unless you know what it is they're looking for. Imagine walking into a clothing store with the intention of buying a black t-shirt. The sales clerk walks over and starts trying to sell you a pair of pants, shoes, and a bowtie. Would you be sold? The internet is similar in that the market is absolutely saturated with products, where your target audience may be looking for something specific. Affiliate marketers need to identify people who would be genuinely interested in the products being marketed to them. This is the only way an affiliate marketing program can be lucrative.

2. Stay in the know: The internet marketing industry is dynamic. New tools, new techniques of research, and other industry developments are always cropping up. It is important to stay updated so that you can leverage your marketing potential to the fullest. Besides pop ups, banners, and ad space, there is a lot more to affiliate marketing, and the risk of going obsolete is always high. Not only will keeping up with the latest trends help you reach your target market better, but it will also give you a more sophisticated view of the impact your campaign is having.

3. Cover your bases: Know what you're marketing and know who you're marketing for. As an affiliate marketer, though the product may not be yours, you may face a lot of repercussions from customers for promoting unethical or objectionable products. Since you are taking the responsibility for marketing someone else's product, your credibility is at risk, if customers find themselves dissatisfied. I recently read a great film review online, and was tempted to watch the movie. The movie turned out to be terrible, and considering the high rating it had had, it damaged my perception of the website! Do not take similar risks in your affiliate marketing program.

4. Research and tracking: Research comes before, during, and after the launch of an affiliate marketing campaign. Establish that the product you are marketing will have some demand, use several tools to see which one is working best for you, and run constant analytics to find out how you can improve. Split test your campaigns so you can shortlist the techniques that work best for your product. Marketing is as much of a science as it is an art, so don't make the mistake of undermining data.

Well that covers the basics. Now you know what it takes. But nothing will give you the knowledge like experience. I could tell you facts that I've read and learned by watching others, but my best stuff is the knowledge I've experienced.

It will be no different for you. The best process I suggest is learn, do, and then teach. This is how the best marketers learned how to become a successful affiliate marketer.

I've found the best way to succed online is to study the rare people who are making millions of dollars online from affiliate marketing. Learn as much as you can and associate with as many top marketers as you can. The Quickest Way to Become an Affiliate Marketer

The quickest way to become an affiliate marketer is to set up a blog site. This method means that you don't need to learn how to write websites or use a complex programme like Dreamweaver. All you need to do is install free blog software like WordPress and then either download a free blog theme or pay for a more professional looking theme (around $50).
These are the steps you need to follow to set up an affiliate marketing blog:

  1. Decide on your topic. This should be something you are passionate about but should also have a large number of product that you can promote
  2. Decide on a domain name. Try and get one that's short, simple, catchy and relevant. When you find a great name that's available you may want to buy its.net and.org equivalent.
  3. Get a host for your domain. There are thousands of hosting companies. Preferably you should choose one that had a good bandwidth allowance and comes with cPanel. You should aim to spend $5-$10 per month on this.
  4. If you went for a host with cPanel, the process of installing a WordPress blog is very easy. You simply go onto the cPanel menus and find 'install WordPress blog'. Everything else is automatic. The host will inform you when WP has been successfully installed on your account
  5. Next you need to choose a pre-designed theme for your site. The WordPress website has thousands of free themes available to download. Just be aware that there have been reports that some of these free themes have carried viruses etc. If your willing to spend $50-$70 you can get yourself a really nice looking theme. I would recommend this as not only do these themes look better but they work much more efficiently as well and usually come optimised for the search engines
  6. Start writing content for your site. In other words, start writing blog posts. Divide your posts into different categories using the WordPress category tool.
  7. Create a custom logo or header and arrange the menus and widgets to optimise the website visuals. You could design the logo yourself using a programme like Photoshop or you could get a graphic designer to do it for you. Either way, it's the one thing that's going to make your site look really unique
  8. Sign up to some affiliate networks like ClickBank and Commission Junction. Select relevant programmes and copy the links into your articles.
  9. Up until now nobody really knows about your website so you wont have many visitors if any at all. You now need to get out and market your website. There are a number of different strategies you can employ to drive traffic to your website e.g article marketing, forum posting etc etc.
  10. To really give yourself a head start in Affiliate Marketing, I recommend that you download and read an affiliate handbook from one of the industries leading experts. You can find a list of the 2011 top affiliate handbooks by following the link below
Its a difficult task to undertake but what I've tried to do is to identify who's published the most popular affiliate handbook. I've searched through forums for peoples recommendations and this is what I've come up with. Here's a Link to a review of the top 3 affiliate experts of 2011: ExpertsCompared.com
